A retired member of the CT law enforcement community, Mr. Furhman is certified by the Connecticut Police Academy, The National Rifle Association and the State of Utah Department of Public Safety as a licensed firearms instructor. For the NRA he trains students in many disciplines including law enforcement pistol and shotgun, civilian basic safety pistol and rifle, advanced pistol markmanship and personal defense encounter shooting in the home. For the Connecticut Police Academy he is a general firearms P.O.S.T. instructor for active duty police officers. He is also a certified range safety officer.
For the State of Utah, Mr. Furhman is a licensed Concealed Carry Firearms Permit Instructor. He also instructs in tactical shotgun and advanced defensive techniques. Mr. Furhman is a U.S. Homeland Security/ FEMA technical instructor for police, fire and ems personnel through the New Mexico Tech Energenic Materials Research and Testing Center for the Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings course and the Prevention and Response to Suicide Bomber Incidents program. Additionally, Herb has attended numerous advanced courses at the United States Homeland Security Training Center in Anniston, Alabama.

Herb is a graduate of Boston University and was president of his recruit training class at the Connecticut Police Academy . He also served many years as a state academy instructor for correctional officers, counselors and other state officials.
Herb not only teaches courses in firearms, but has taught medical and other safety courses on topics ranging from fire safety to suicide prevention to AIDS/HIV and CPR/first aid.
He is a state certified firefighter, and a ten year re-elected president of the Gaylordsville Fire Department.
As a volunteer supervisor for the American National Red Cross Disaster Services. Herb was deployed during the 2005 Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort, the 2007 San Diego Wildfires and the 2008 Hurricane Ike Relief Effort in Galveston, Texas.
Herb provides entertaining and thought provoking programs, looking at issues and concerns while expanding his students' insight into firearm safety. Present and past students include law enforcement and military personnel, national park service employees and the general public, from youth to adults.
